Incheon Airport to Hongdae transportation options including AREX, airport bus and taxi

Incheon Airport to Hongdae: AREX, Bus or Taxi? (2026)

Getting from Incheon Airport to Hongdae is straightforward once you know one important thing: don’t assume “Express” is the right train just because it sounds faster.

Short on time? Take the AREX All-Stop Train if you want the cheapest direct rail option. It runs straight to Hongik Univ. Station. Carrying more luggage than you want to haul through a subway station? Airport Bus 6002 serves several useful stops around Hongdae. Arriving late at night? You’re not automatically stuck with a taxi. Hongdae has a direct night airport bus.

One more thing many guides skip: “Hongdae” isn’t one address. Whether you’re staying near Hongik Univ. Station, around the main Hongdae strip, in Yeonnam-dong, or closer to Hapjeong changes which option actually gets you closest to your door.

For Hongdae, both the AREX All-Stop Train and Bus 6002 can get you there without a transfer. The real choice is usually price and predictability versus luggage convenience and hotel location.

Option 1: AREX All-Stop Train — Best for Most Travelers

Getting to Hongdae by rail is unusually simple. The AREX All-Stop Train runs directly from both Incheon Airport terminals to Hongik Univ. Station, so no transfer is required.

  • Incheon Airport T1 → Hongik Univ. Station: ₩4,650
  • Incheon Airport T2 → Hongik Univ. Station: ₩5,250
  • Transfers: none
  • T-money: accepted

Travel time varies by terminal and train. AREX updated its All-Stop timetable in late 2025, so rather than relying on an old exact-minute figure, allow roughly 45–55 minutes and check the current official timetable close to your travel date.

Why You Should NOT Take AREX Express to Hongdae

This is the mistake worth flagging up front. The AREX Express sounds like the faster, more premium option, and for some destinations it is. For Hongdae, it isn’t the direct train.

According to AREX’s official carriage terms, the Express Train stops at Incheon Airport T1, T2 and Seoul Station. It does not stop at Hongik Univ. Station.

KOREA REALITY CHECK
Taking the AREX Express to Hongdae means riding past Hongik Univ. Station to Seoul Station and then making another trip back toward Hongdae. If Hongdae is your destination, the All-Stop Train is the direct rail option.

For a broader comparison of AREX, airport buses and taxis to other parts of Seoul, see our Incheon Airport to Seoul transportation guide.

Option 2: Airport Bus 6002 — Better with Heavy Luggage

If you’d rather avoid carrying bags through Hongik Univ. Station, Airport Limousine Bus 6002 serves several useful stops around the greater Hongdae area, including Hapjeong, Seogyo-dong, Hongdae Entrance and Sinchon.

Useful 6002 Stops Around Hongdae

Stop Useful for
Hapjeong Station Hotels around Hapjeong and the western side of the Hongdae area
Seogyo-dong (RYSE Hotel area) Hotels around Seogyo-dong / RYSE Hotel
Hongdae Entrance (Mercure Ambassador Seoul Hongdae / L7 Hongdae) Main Hongdae hotel area
Hyundai Department Store Sinchon Sinchon shopping area
Sinchon Station Hotels and accommodation on the Sinchon side

Check these stops against your exact hotel address before choosing the bus. A hotel described simply as being “in Hongdae” could actually be closer to Hongik Univ. Station, Seogyo-dong, Hapjeong or Sinchon.

2026 HONGDAE STOP UPDATE
From July 1, 2026, the Hongdae Entrance drop-off stop for 6002 and N6002 buses traveling from Incheon Airport toward Seoul moved from the center bus lane to a curbside stop. The airport-bound boarding stop did not move and remains in the center lane.

Option 3: Taxi from Incheon Airport to Hongdae

A taxi is the simplest door-to-door option, particularly when:

  • You’re carrying heavy luggage and want to avoid walking between a station or bus stop and your hotel
  • You’re traveling with 3–4 people and want to compare one taxi fare with several airport bus tickets
  • Your hotel isn’t close to Hongik Univ. Station or any of the useful 6002 stops

A taxi from Incheon Airport may include expressway tolls on top of the metered fare. Vehicle type also matters: a regular taxi, International Taxi or larger vehicle can differ in both cost and luggage capacity.

For taxi types, payment, surcharges and airport-transfer details, see our complete guide to taking a taxi in Korea.

Late-Night Arrival: You’re Not Stuck With Just a Taxi

Once regular AREX and daytime airport bus services wind down, it’s easy to assume a taxi is the only option left. Hongdae has another choice.

N6002 Night Bus

Airport Limousine operates the N6002 night bus from Incheon Airport to Hongdae.

Incheon Airport T2 → T1 → Hongdae → Four Seasons Hotel → Heunginjimun → Cheongnyangni

  • Fare: Adult ₩17,000 / Child ₩10,000
  • Estimated travel time to Hongdae: about 45 minutes from T1 and about 65 minutes from T2
  • Ticketing: for city-bound N6002 service, purchase a ticket at an airport ticket machine before boarding

Departures run overnight but are limited, and the timetable can change. Check the current schedule for your actual arrival date instead of relying on an old screenshot or blog timetable.

KOREA REALITY CHECK
Missing the last AREX train doesn’t automatically mean taking a taxi. Hongdae has a direct official night airport bus, so check N6002 before deciding.

When a Taxi Still Makes Sense at Night

  • The next N6002 departure means a long wait
  • Your hotel is far from the Hongdae stop
  • You’re traveling as a group with several large bags
  • You simply prefer door-to-door travel after a late flight

Where in Hongdae Are You Actually Staying?

Hongdae area comparison showing Hongik University Station, Hongdae Entrance, Yeonnam-dong and Hapjeong for airport transportation

“Hongdae” gets used loosely to describe a fairly wide area, and hotels advertised as being “in Hongdae” can sit in genuinely different places relative to Hongik Univ. Station and the airport bus stops.

Hongik Univ. Station

This is the AREX All-Stop Train’s direct stop. If your hotel is a short walk from the right station exit, the train is usually the simplest and cheapest option.

Hongdae Entrance / Main Strip (near Mercure, L7)

This is where Bus 6002 becomes more attractive. Its Hongdae Entrance stop serves the main hotel area around Mercure Ambassador Seoul Hongdae and L7 Hongdae, which can reduce the amount of walking you need to do with luggage.

Remember that the airport-to-Seoul drop-off location moved to a curbside stop on July 1, 2026, so older maps and screenshots may show the previous center-lane location.

Yeonnam-dong

Yeonnam-dong sits on the opposite side of Hongik Univ. Station from much of the main Hongdae strip. If your accommodation is here, check the exact station exit before assuming the Hongdae Entrance bus stop will be closer. In many cases, Hongik Univ. Station itself is the more practical arrival point.

Hapjeong / Seogyo-dong Side

If your hotel is closer to Hapjeong or Seogyo-dong, one of the 6002 stops in that area may save you a long walk from Hongik Univ. Station.

If you prefer rail and your hotel is near Hapjeong Station, another option is to take AREX to Hongik Univ. Station, transfer to Seoul Subway Line 2, and travel one stop to Hapjeong Station.

ACTUALLY
Don’t choose your airport route based only on the word “Hongdae” in a hotel listing. Check the exact address against Hongik Univ. Station’s exits and the 6002 stop locations. With a large suitcase, the difference can matter more than a few minutes on the train or bus.

If you haven’t chosen your hotel yet, our Where to Stay in Seoul guide compares Hongdae with Myeongdong, Jongno, Seoul Station and Gangnam.

Door-to-Door: Which Is Actually Faster?

A timetable only tells you how long the vehicle is moving. It doesn’t tell you how long the whole airport-to-hotel trip will take.

The AREX travel-time figure doesn’t include:

  • Walking from the arrivals hall to the AREX platform
  • Waiting for the next train
  • Finding the correct exit at Hongik Univ. Station
  • Walking from the station to your hotel

Bus 6002 can reduce the amount of station walking, especially if one of its stops is close to your hotel. The trade-off is that road traffic makes bus travel less predictable than a train running on its own rail line.

A taxi removes the station or bus-stop walk almost entirely, which matters most with heavy luggage or accommodation away from the main transport stops.

The practical takeaway: for Hongdae, both AREX All-Stop and Bus 6002 can be direct, no-transfer options. If your hotel is near Hongik Univ. Station and you’re traveling light, AREX is difficult to beat on price and simplicity. If your hotel sits closer to a 6002 stop and you’re carrying large luggage, the bus can be worth the higher fare.

Which Option Should You Choose?

Solo traveler + light luggage + lowest cost
→ Take the AREX All-Stop Train directly to Hongik Univ. Station.

Large suitcase + hotel near a 6002 stop
→ Take Airport Bus 6002 and get off at the stop closest to your hotel.

Hotel in Yeonnam-dong
→ Check the nearest Hongik Univ. Station exit before assuming an airport bus stop is closer.

Hotel near Hapjeong
→ Compare Bus 6002 with AREX to Hongik Univ. plus a one-stop Line 2 transfer.

3–4 travelers with luggage
→ Compare the total cost and luggage capacity of a taxi with several 6002 tickets.

Late-night arrival
→ Check the N6002 schedule first. Hongdae has a direct night airport bus, so a taxi isn’t automatically your only option.

Common Mistakes When Traveling from Incheon Airport to Hongdae

Taking the AREX Express Because It Sounds Faster

It skips Hongik Univ. Station, so you’d need another trip from Seoul Station.

Assuming a Late Arrival Means a Taxi

Check N6002 first. It serves Hongdae overnight.

Treating “Hongdae” as One Location

Match your hotel’s exact address against Hongik Univ. Station’s exits and the 6002 stops before choosing a route.

Using an Old Hongdae Airport Bus Stop Map

The airport-to-Seoul Hongdae Entrance drop-off point for 6002 and N6002 moved to a curbside stop on July 1, 2026.

Not Checking the T2 6002 Ticketing Rule

Since March 5, 2026, Terminal 2 passengers taking Route 6002 need to purchase a ticket before boarding.
